Broad Bean – Bunyards Exhibition

Broad Bean ‘Bunyard’s Exhibition’ (introduced 1884) is a reliable, high-yielding English heirloom known for producing long pods with well-flavoured beans. Perfect for freezing.

It is best suited for spring sowing (February–April) to harvest from July, though it can be sown in autumn.

  • Variety Characteristics: Produces tall plants (up to 100-120cm) that are highly branched and productive.
  • Sowing: Sow seeds 5cm (2″) deep in rows 60cm (24″) apart.
  • Spacing: Thin seedlings to 10cm (4″) apart.
  • Care: Pinch out the top 6cm (3″) of growth when the first pods set to deter blackfly. Support may be needed as they can grow quite tall.
  • Harvest: Generally ready from July onwards.
